Fresh Arts Festival – Southmead Hospital Bristol

Artists, musicians, dancers and choirs will join patients, staff and visitors at Southmead Hospital Bristol during the 2-day Fresh Arts Festival that will take place on the 18th and 19th September 2015 to celebrate the role that creativity and the arts play in supporting health and wellbeing.

Local artists and art students from the University of West of England will be joined by artists and art students visiting from University of Tsukuba in Japan during this exciting programme of free arts activities for patients, staff, visitors, families and local residents.

The Fresh Arts Festival will include foot-tapping live music for patients on wards and pop-up choirs in public areas; patients and visitors are invited to drop into inspiring origami, calligraphy, printmaking and woodworking workshops; the mesmerizing Concorde Wheelchair Dancers will perform in the hospital atrium; a giant knitted installation created by dozens of local knitters will be unveiled; a Japanese ‘washi tape’ installation will cover the walls with pictures and patterns; performances from ‘Bristol Art Library’ will intrigue and delight; and there will be a chance to tour the new hospital to find out more about Fresh Arts, the hospital’s ongoing arts programme.

The first Fresh Arts Festival took place last year to celebrate the opening of the Brunel building and was a huge success.

North Bristol NHS Trust Director of Nursing, Sue Jones described the impact of last year’s Festival: “I thought it was a fantastic event; so inspiring. The festival brought a real sense of community to the hospital and was so beneficial for patients. It was like breathing soul into the building.”

“The Festival is a fantastic way of welcoming people into the hospital building and showing them that it is a healing space,” said North Bristol NHS Trust Fresh Arts Manager Ruth Sidgwick.

The Fresh Arts Festival 2015 will take place on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th September. All events and activities are free, and open to patients, staff, visitors, families and local residents. There is no need to book, just turn up and take part.
