The over-prescription of antidepressants has become a multi-million pound earner for the drugs industry, a GP is claiming. It is ‘its golden goose, incurable, common, long term, and involving multiple medications,’ write Glasgow based Dr Des Spence in an article for the British Medical Journal. Antidepressant prescriptions in Britain rose 9.6 per cent in 2011 to 46million. Other mental health experts say their use is vital and still misunderstood by some GPs.
